DEFENSIVE 3-POINT STRATEGY
By
Glenn Wilkes
Former Head Coach, Stetson University
The most important part of 3-point defensive strategy is to know WHO and HOW MANY 3-point shooters are on the opposing team. Defensive problems increase the more 3-point shooters the opponent has in its lineup. Therefore, this will place much importance on ACCURATE SCOUTING INFORMATION and for this information to be clearly given to the team.
WHAT TYPE OF DEFENSE CAN BE PLAYED?
The number of 3-point shooters on the opposing team will vary from game to game and will influence the type of defense that can be played. Most teams will have no more than one good 3-point shot3er and either a zone or man-for-man defense can be effective particularly when defensive players remain conscious of where the 3-point shooter is. Those teams that have two or three 3-point shooters pose a different problem. A "zone defensive coach" may find that the opponent has too many 3-point shooters for his standard zone to be effective and that he either must play man-for-man or extend his zone in an effort to cover the 3-point shooters. Of course, any extension of the zone reduces the advantage of the zone and makes inside defense weaker. A "man-for-man" defensive coach may find that his standard "helpside" rules may not prevent the opponent from getting 3-point shots from the weakside. Since the offense will get more 3-point shots on the weakside than on the strongside, some adjustment in the helpside defensive rules may be necessary. IF YOU ADJUST YOUR HELPSIDE RULES, YOU MAY HAVE TO CHANGE THE METHOD OF GUARDING THE POST PLAYER. Again, much of defensive strategy-whether man or zone-will depend a great deal on how many good 3-point shooters the opponent has.
MATCH-UP ZONE CAN BE MORE EFFECTIVE AGAINST 3-POINT SHOOTERS
The match-up zone can be more effective than a standard zone when playing against teams with several good 3-poiont shooters. Since the match-up is a zone that plays; man-for[-man principles, more pressure can be applied to the outside shooter. Therefore, coaches will probably place greater emphasis on the match-up zone as a weapon to combat the 3-point shot.
COMBINATION DEFENSES WILL BE GOOD AGAINST 3-POINT SHOOTERS
In addition to more emphasis on the match-up zone, combination defenses will become more popular as a defensive strategy for combating the 3-point shot. If a team has one excellent 3-point shooter, either the BOX-AND-ONE or the DIAMOND-AND-ONE combination defense will be very effective. However, if a team has two good 3-point shooters, a TRIANGLE-AND-TWO may be the best defense. Whether or not a team has used combination defenses in the past, it will be a good idea to have it in your defensive plans in the event a team with good 3-poiont shooters hurt either your man or zone defense.
TYPE OF STANDARD ZONE DEFENSE THAT IS BEST FOR 3-POINT SHOOTERS
The 3-2 zone defense (also called the 1-2-2_ is the best standard zone for combating the 3-point shooter. A basic 2-1-2 or 1-3-1 leaves too many spots in the perimeter for the 3-point shooter. The 3-2 zone defense covers more area of the perimeter than other defenses.
TRAPPING IS A GOOD TECHNIQUE FOR DEFENSING THE 3-POINT SHOOTER
If your team is going against an outstanding 3-point shooter, it is a good idea to put him in a trapping situation as often as possible. For example, if he is the opponent's 2 or 3 man, when 1 makes a pass to him, you defender guarding 1 can immediately leave to trap 2 or 3. This will serve the purpose of (1) running the opponent out of its offensive pattern and (2) making the good 3-point shooter give up the ball.
3-POINT SHOOTER CAN GIVE FULL COUIRT ZONE PRESS TROUBLES
Coaches who like the full court zone press may find that they cannot use the defense as much against teams with good 3-point shooters. It is very difficult to prevent the 3-point shot on defensive pursuit from a press. Defensive pursuit after a team has broken a trap tends to attempt to sprint back and protect the basket area. Good 3-pioint shooting teams will take advantage ofthis and shoot the 3-pointer before the defense can recover into defensive position.
