LEE HUMPHREY:
Basketball Success in God’s Service

All-American, clean-cut, wholesome...

Those are just few of the stellar words used to describe Lee Humphrey, shooting guard for the Florida Gators. Nobody can discount his contribution to the team’s championship victory at the 2006 NCAA finals done in Indianapolis. His accurate three-point shots help snagged Florida’s first ever men’s basketball title. He basked in the limelight and adoration of fans. And found that it was not like anything he dreamed it would be.

Coming home, Humphrey did not found complete fulfillment in the team’s win. He reflected on this and has been talking about it ever since.

A native of Maryville in Tennessee, Humphrey grew up in a Christian household, spending summers playing basketball and water skiing with friends and family. Basketball influence came from his father, a coach. He made his mark in high school by leading his team to several district and regional victories, winning several honors for himself along the way. Up to the collegiate level, he is well known and feared in the court for his long-range basket shots, a feat he achieved through discipline and constant practice. And nowhere was his skill much appreciated than on that night they won the NCAA title.

His affability earned him the name of “Opie,” given to him by Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan after the cute character in “The Andy Griffith Show.” Donovan stressed Humphrey’s genial personality, citing only one incidence in which he had to mete punishment to the young player for missing a team breakfast. It gave Donovan a chance to make Humphrey run extra distance and for Lee to show to his teammates he wasn’t as square as they perceived him to be.

His spiritual flame hadn’t really kindled until college, when he joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). His spiritual growth has helped him adjust to a life away from home and cemented his dedication to live in God’s word. In keeping with his presidency of FCA’s Florida chapter, he maintains perfect attendance in weekly Bible studies. His popularity following the national championship was translated to speaking engagements around and beyond the state. He visits schools and church groups to talk on spirituality and his life. He has traveled to China and Brazil with the Sports Reach ministry, using himself as instrument in spreading God’s Word.
With all these activities, does he still dream of making it to the NBA?

“We’ll see how this year goes, and if it works out, great,” was his answer. He stress that he has ambitions but his consuming passion is serving the Lord. He talks of basketball as a means of glorifying the Almighty. Remarkably, this small town boy has taken all the accolades and recognition going his way into songs of praises to strengthen his personal relationship with God
